• Jury announces decision (or judge in a bench trial)
After the jury completes deliberations, they return to the courtroom to announce their verdict. This is the official decision about who wins the case. The jury will explain whether they found the defendant liable (responsible) and, if so, what damages or remedies they award to the plaintiff. The verdict must be based solely on the evidence and the law as instructed by the judge.
In a bench trial, where there is no jury, the judge reviews all the evidence and issues the verdict themselves. Regardless of who decides, the verdict marks the end of the trial phase.
After the verdict is announced, there may be additional steps, like post-trial motions or appeals, but the verdict is the key moment when the dispute is resolved by the court.
